VDP.ERSTE LAGE

Of the seven VDP-classified single vineyards around Castell, five are monopole vineyards, some of which are over 750 years old and planted with vines up to 50 years old. The CASTELLER SCHLOSSBERG, classified as a VDP GROSSE LAGE, towers high above the village. The four VDP.ERSTE LAGEN HOHNART, KUGELSPIEL, TRAUTBERG and REITSTEIG are also in our sole ownership. They are joined by two further VDP.ERSTE LAGEN, KIRCHBERG and BAUSCH. We pay the utmost attention to all these special sites, which are clustered around the wine village of Castell.

The wines from our VDP.ERSTE LAGEN are only released on the market one year after the harvest. This extended maturing time in the barrel gives them a great deal of complexity and texture.

VDP.FIRST SITE KUGELSPIEL

The name of this location probably goes back to a bowling alley that was located here on the edge of the forest. The morning sun warms the sandy-loamy soil, which stores it perfectly for the rest of the day. The 300 to 350 meter high wooded hilltop to the west protects the vineyards at Kugelspiel from the wind and creates a temperate climate. The interplay of red-brown bladder sandstone and green reed sandstone produces delicate wines with herbal spice and mineral density.

VDP.FIRST SITE HOHNART

The formerly wooded little hill at the foot of the village was mentioned as an important Casteller vineyard as early as 1266. The warm southern exposure is characterized by a loamy, clayey gypsum keuper. The high temperatures during the day and cooler temperatures at night help the grapes to ripen optimally. The Hohnart produces wines with fruity aromas and a spicy minerality, often with hints of exotic fruit.

VDP.FIRST SITE TRAUTBERG

The Trautberg lies slightly away from the village, on a small, picturesque valley depression. Due to the south and south-west facing slope and the easily warmed, loamy clay soil, the site offers the best conditions for Silvaner, the only variety grown here. The sheltered Trautberg site ideally stores the warmth and yet always displays an exciting but harmonious acidity.

VDP.FIRST SITE KIRCHBERG

The Kirchberg faces the evening sun. Facing west and close to the village, it benefits from favorable westerly winds. The warmth lasts into the evening hours, a combination that results in healthy grape ripening. In addition, the relationship of the soil to the Schlossberg makes this ERSTE LAGE unique. The deep soil is more fertile here than in the Schlossberg above. It gains its minerality from the foothills of the alabaster veins and the high lime content of the gypsum keuper. It is thanks to the special geology that the wines on the Kirchberg show a hint of flintstone.

VDP.FIRST SITE REITSTEIG

The Reitsteig is one of the oldest vineyards in Castell. Its name goes back to an old path that connected the village with the former castle on the Schlossberg until the 18th century. Today, as in the past, the steep, south-facing slope with a gradient of up to 70% provides the perfect basis for white and red Burgundy varieties with depth and character thanks to the loamy, clayey soil. The inward curvature of the hill leads to a further concentration of heat, perfect for sophisticated, slow-ripening Burgundies.
